What is Pterygium?
Pterygium is a non-cancerous, wing-shaped growth of the conjunctiva—the thin, transparent tissue that covers the white part of the eye. This growth gradually extends onto the cornea and may cause irritation, redness, recurrent inflammation, and in advanced cases, blurred or distorted vision. Although the exact cause is not fully understood, pterygium is strongly associated with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, dry and dusty environments, and chronic eye irritation.
